Low Blood Pressure can be Dangerous for the Elderly

High blood pressure is generally considered more dangerous than low blood pressure. If the level of low blood pressure in a healthy person has not gone down much, then people do not even realize it. Low blood pressure can be a problem for the elderly. If the blood pressure level is too low in the elderly, it can be fatal for them. When the blood pressure in the body is 120/80 then it is normal BP whereas if it falls below 90/60 then it is low blood pressure. This means that in this condition the blood flow to the heart, brain, and other essential organs is decreasing, that is, oxygenated blood is not able to reach these organs. When oxygenated blood does not reach any organ, that organ does not function for long. Therefore, if such a condition occurs in the elderly, it is very dangerous. 


Low blood pressure can increase the risk of heart attack and stroke. Low blood pressure also affects the brain and in more severe cases can even lead to death. Therefore, it is important that you make immediate changes in your lifestyle. 

 


What to do if the Elderly have Low Blood Pressure?


Exercise:

First of all, do regular exercise. This makes the blood flow smoothly to all organs. Apart from this, exercise has many other advantages.

 

Drink more salt:

Increase the intake of salt in your food. Good sources of salt include olives, cheese, and canned soup or tuna. You can include these things in your food as per your choice. You can also use sea salt in your food.

 

Eat less but eat quicker:

The amount of food should be reduced when there is low blood pressure. Blood pressure usually decreases after eating more. So eat less but eat more frequently.

 

Eat Amla:

Eating Amla with low BP is beneficial. For this, just mix one spoon of honey in one cup of gooseberry juice and drink it. Doing this will give you quick relief. Apart from this, you can also eat gooseberry jam.
